CATIA V6 online at 36,000 ft: ON and ABOVE the cloud :)

As I am frequently flying over US to meet with customers, I’ve spent a lot of time working in planes. So I appreciate that CATIA V6 be ‘on the cloud’ in the sense that it allows to refine a 3D design online using a standard https web connection. I thought I would share with you my experience of design using CATIA V6… from 36,000 feet.

YES: this is not just about being ON the cloud but also, literally, ABOVE the cloud(s) ! 🙂

What I like when authoring with CATIA V6 is that I don’t need to check out and download locally my assembly to perform my modifications, and check them back in. Nope. Instead, I navigate through the 3D design residing on the server instantly over the web, open the parts I want to work with, perform the changes and hit save (more precisely “propagate” as we say in V6, as it also manages the potential impacts) when I’m done.

Maybe this video can give a new meaning to streaming “up/down” only what is necessary of the 3D design: up/down from a plane.

You stated in your comments the following for V6
“open the parts I want to work with, perform the changes and hit save”
So what happens if another user is doing the same thing, wasn’t the check out operation a security(lock mechanasims)to avoid others from making changes to the same part at the same time?
Have I misunderstood this process of the old CATIA?

  • Cool video. Mostly demonstrate how latency influence of V6. What is btw the highest possible latency level for CATIA v6?

PS. As you noticed I did my experiments with Inforbix Product Data Apps from Lufthansa 747 over the Atlantic ocean.

  • Hi John, thanks for the comment. With CATIA V5, you had to check out the files, i.e. locally download the parts you wanted to edit. Of course, you preferably would want to use lock mechanism in order to avoid reconciliation issues in case someone else would locally check out the same files. With CATIA V6, there is no such local download, you simply access the parts from “where they are” (single version of the truth). That’s why we wouldn’t talk about checking out anymore, but of course the lock mechanism remains relevant. What’s more, with CATIA V6 you don’t have to lock the parent of an assembly to make modification on parts, i.e. different people can lock and edit different parts of a same assembly without having to lock the parent entity of the assembly. Last but not least, with 3DLive you can visually check in 3D which parts are locked (green=locked by yourself, red=locked by someone else, translucent=not locked) and by who. And if parts are locked by someone else you can trigger a co-design review (opening “3D chat” if you like) with the colleague who locked the part(s).

Remarkable! Its in fact amazing piece of writing, I have got much clear
idea regarding from this piece of writing.
